Abstract

Endomyocardial fibrosis is characterized by swelling of the endocardial connective tissue, with accumulation of acid mucopolysaccharides in the endocardium followed by scarring and fibrosis. It may affect one or both ventricles primarily and the other cardiac chambers to a lesser extent. It is a cardiac disease that may be associated with lesions in other parts of the body but rarely clinical systemic thromboembolism in comparison to idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome. This is a case of endomyocardial fibrosis in a 27 year old woman that was complicated by thromboembolism to the systemic circulation leading to auto-amputation of the left leg. What is documented in the literature is that emboli to the systemic circulation occur in a very small percentage of patients while pulmonary emboli are more frequent. In the present case report, emboli occurred in the systemic circulation which makes the case clinically interesting.
