Abstract

Mucocele is defined as a cystic mass resulting from a dilated appendiceal lumen caused by abnormal accumulation of mucus. The term mucocele is a gross description, not a pathologic diagnosis. The underlying cause for the mucinous accumulation ranges from a hyperplastic to a malignant process. We present a case of mucinous cystadenoma of the appendix which diagnosed postoperatively after an elective appendectomy performed because of plastron appendicitis.

Key words: Appendix, mucocele, mucinous cystadenoma
