Swapnil Y Chaudhari, Harisha CR, Galib, Pradeep Kumar Prajapati.

Abstract

Amorphophallus campanulatus, commonly known as Surana in Sanskrit is a tuberous stout herb (corm) belonging to the family Araceae. In Ayurveda,it is used in many disease conditions like Arsha (Piles), Pliha (splenic disorders), Gulma (lump), Shwasa (Bronchial Asthma) and Ashtila (Enlarged Prostate) etc. Till date, there are no pharmacognostical reports have been available on its corm. In current study, T.S of corm and its powder, histochemical tests and preliminary physicochemical investigations were done. Results showed raphids, rosette crystals of calcium oxalate, presence of lignine, starch grains etc. Preliminary physicochemical analysis revealed loss on drying (0.75%), ash value (0.6%), alcohol soluble extract (6.8%), and water soluble extract (13.3%). These observations can be considered as standard in future studies.

Key words: Amorphophallus campanulatus, corm, kanda, pharmacognosy, raphids, surana.
