The Effect of Self-efficacy and Coping Strategy on Treatment Motivation of Individuals in Substance Addiction Group Work Process

Abstract

Objective: Substance use behavior is increasing in our country, and also the importance of substance use treatment and rehabilitation studies have increased. The adaptation and treatment motivation of substance user’ s is crucial for the effectiveness of treatment and rehabilitation studies. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between psychosocial variables and treatment motivation, and to determine the effect of psychosocial variables, self-efficacy and coping strategies on treatment motivation in 336 substance users who are in the Smoking, Alcohol and Substance Dependency Group Study.
Method: Indpendent- sample t test and ANOVA are performed to investigate the differences between psychosocial variables and treatment motivation and hierarchical multiple regression analysis were performed to find predictive variables of the treatment motivation.
Results: According to the results it was found meaningful difference between age, education status, income status of the individual, duration and number of substance use, family problems and psychiatric disorder and the treatment motivation. In addition, the most important predictive variables of treatment motivation are individual’ s income level, having a child, family problems and coping strategies.
Conclusion: It is thought that cognitive and behavioral studies should be done to strengthen the social support mechanisms, to increase the supportive participation of the family members, and to develop the coping strategies as well as motivational techniques in order to increase the adaptation and motivation of the individuals.
