Effectiveness of self-instructional module on knowledge and attitude regarding antenatal care among primigravida mothers in selected government hospital, Dehradun, Uttarakhand

Abstract

Background: Mother is the greatest gift of God and life is mother’s gift to everyone. Being mother is a great responsibility and it is woman’s utmost crown of honor. Constitutional human rights contain right to life. The access to safe and sound pregnancy and childbirth services is human rights for woman. Death is the last stage for millions of women in a story of extensive pain and sufferings; even millions, more women are injured in this process and live with permanent disability.

Objective: The key objective of the study was to improve the knowledge and attitude level by examining the effectiveness of self-instructional module on antenatal care among primigravida mothers in District Women Hospital, Dehradun, Uttarakhand.

Materials and Methods: The study was conducted at District Women Hospital, Dehradun, using quantitative approach and pre-experimental one - group pre-test - post-test design. 62 primigravida mothers attending antenatal clinics were selected by consecutive sampling technique. Pre-test was conducted, then intervention (self-instructional module) was implemented. Post-test was carried out after 7 days. Findings of the study reveal that self-instructional module was effective (at 0.05 level of significance) in improving the knowledge and attitude level among primigravida mothers.

Results: Self-instructional module is an effective method to improve the knowledge and attitude level among primigravida mothers.

Conclusion: Self-instructional module was useful tool to improve the knowledge and attitude of primigravida mothers regarding antenatal care. Hence, the effective teaching material on antenatal care must be instituted in all communities with a view to bring awareness regarding maternal and child health and to achieve the definitive goal of antenatal care, a healthy birth from healthy mother.
