Abstract

Objective: To investigate the preventive effect of a herb Tribulus terrestris on Nifedipine induced damage by observing macro and microstructure of testis.
Methodology: Male Sprague Dawley rats (N=120) were divided into four groups, each comprising of 30 rats. Group A was given vehicle whereas group B, C and D were given Nifedipine only, Tribulus terrestris only and Nifedipine and Tribulus terrestris both, respectively by gavage for 56 days. The weight of rats was observed at the start and end of experimental period. At the end of experiment, testicular weight was taken and gonadosomatic index was calculated. Hematoxylin and Eosin stained slides were assessed for changes in microstructure of testis in all groups and then compared. Results were analyzed on SPSS version 21.
Results: Significant difference was observed between Testicular weights and gonadosomatic indices between Nifedipine only group and treated rats.
Conclusion: Extract of Tribulus terrestris was observed to reverse the effects of Nifedipine on macro and microstructure of testis.

Key words: Male infertility, Gonadosomatic index, Nifedipine
