Abstract

A fifteen years old girl was admitted to our clinic with the complaint of diplopia in up-gaze. In ocular motor examination, restriction in up-gaze was noticed. With the suspect of thyroid ophtalmopathy or orbital myositis magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was conducted and thickening of inferior rectus with the involvement of its tendon was demonstrated. Thyroid hormone profile was normal. The diagnosis of idiopathic orbital myositis was made on MRI findings and 60 mg/day oral fluocortolone was initiated. The fluocortolone was tapered and stopped in two weeks after the disappearance of up-gaze restriction and cessation of the diplopia  in one month.

Key Words: Idiopathic orbital myositis, Thyroid ophthalmopathy, Magnetic resonance imaging
