The Spaces In between; Psychoanaltic Perspective Of Alvi’s Presents From My Aunts In Pakistan

Abstract

Poststructuralism views human subjectivity as a continuous process where different discourses continuously shape it. The poem Presents From My Aunts in Pakistan byMunizaAlvi, represents the dilemma of crisis heterotopia and reveals indecisiveness on part of the poetess regarding her national/cultural identity. The differences of two cultures and her mixed feelings towards her origin continue to haunt her, resulting into a psychological conflict. The two different cultures, as two different discourses, in the poem are analyzed at psychological level in the light of Lacanian Psychoanalysis.The study concludes that the poem is a psychological reflection and expression of a split subject.
