HISTOPATHOLOGICAL ALTERATIONS ON THE LIVER OF NORTHERN PLAINS KILLIFISH (FUNDULUS KANSAE, GARMAN 1895) INDUCED BY EXPOSURE TO PESTICIDES (TERBUFOS AND ATRAZINE)

Mohamed El-Hady, Nassr-Allah Abdel-Hameid.

Abstract

The present study aims to investigate the effects of the pesticides atrazine and terbufos on the killifish (Fundulus kansae). Three concentrations (Low, ¼ LC50; medium, 1/2 LC50 and high, 3/4 LC50) were selected for each pesticide. The fishes raised in water polluted with the insecticides showed abnormal deeds like excitation, erratic swimming and marked cutback in the feeding rates. In addition, abnormal respiratory movements and loss of balance were observed in the fishes exposed to the high concentration of the pesticides. The liver of treated killifish exhibited hepatic lesions, cellular degeneration, massive internal hemorrhages and karyolysis. Combined effects of applied pesticides possessed massive alterations.

Key words: Killifish, Atarzine, Terbufos, Liver, Histology.
