Marital Adjustment

Abstract

Couples who communicate with each other, agree on many marital and family issues and solve problem constructively are described as maritally adjusted; consequently happiness, satisfaction and fullfillment of expectations are possible only by mutual adjustments in a marriage. Therefore, clinicians as well as researchers have become increasingly interested in the quality and accord of marriage. And in this area there is a growing need for studies in our country. The present paper aims to review the major approaches and empirical studies on marital adjustment in western cultures and our own culture. In this review, the probable factors that can induce marital adjustment such as problem solving ability, mutual communication, intimacy, need of love and proximity have been summarized. Moreover, marital maladjustment and its effects on children behaviour have been discussed.
