An Empirical Study and Analysis on Air Displacement Plethysmography versus Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry in Underweight, Normal-Weight, and Overweight/Obese Individuals

Abstract

Estimating fat percentage accurately is critical for assessing health and selecting treatment
options. However, methods for determining body composition, such as hydrostatic weighing or
dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA), can be costly, need significant operator training, and,
in the case of hydrostatic weighing, can be quite stressful for patients. Our goal was to assess air
displacement plethysmography using the Bod Pod, a less time-consuming way of determining
body fat percentage. We addressed a gap in the literature in particular by evaluating the Bod Pod
at the lower end of the Body Mass Index (BMI) spectrum.
