Abstract

Herein, the synthesis, characterization and efficiency test of alum obtained from waste aluminium cans were investigated for wastewater treatment. Prior to the synthesis of the alum, the cans were subjected to physical treatments such as communition(size reduction), plastic components removal, colour label removal, cleaning, pulverization etc. The physically treated waste aluminium cans were later chemically and step wisely converted to alum-a viable double salt. The process economy was found
to be 99.37%. The synthesized alum and purchased alum were analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively. The two samples exhibit similar coagulation performance.

Key words: Alum; communition; process economy; coagulation performance
