Abstract
Cyclophosphamide (CTX) induces toxicity in liver, kidney, and blood cells. The current study was conducted to address the prophylactic effect of apricot (Prunus armeniaca; Family: Rosaceae) seeds alcoholic extract (PASE) against the toxicity induced by CTX on liver and kidney tissues, as well as blood cells in male Swiss mice. Forty male albino mice were used in this study and randomly/equally divided into four groups. Group 1 (Gp1) was severed as negative control. Gp2 was intraperitoneally (i.p.) injected with 200 mg of PASE/kg body weight (b.wt), daily for 30 days. Gp3 was i.p. injected with CTX (200 mg/kg), once at day 30. Gp4 was i.p. injected with PASE and CTX as in Gp2 and Gp3, respectively. Blood and tissues (liver and kidney) were collected at day 33 to analyze the hematological, biochemical, and histopathological changes. The results showed that pretreatment of mice with PASE significantly modulated the CTX-induced leucopenia. In addition, PASE partially protected liver from injury and partially improve kidney functions in CTX-injected mice through inducing mild improvement in their histological structure and liver antioxidant defense system.
