Intraocular pressure changes following cataract surgery in patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome

Purpose: To evaluate the intraocular pressure changes following cataract surgery in patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome.
Study design: Prospective study
Material methods: The study entitled included a total of 68 patients with pseudoexfoliation who were operated for cataract via ECCE in the upgraded Department of ophthalmology, Government medical college, Jammu during one year period w.e.f. 1 November 2018 – 31 October 2019.
Results: A fall in mean IOP was observed after the surgery. Mean preoperative IOP was 16.7176mmHg (S.D.=5.469mmHg) and mean at six weeks was 14.3147mmHg (S.D.=4.829mmHg). This difference is statistically significant with a p-value of 0.004656 (i.e. p value5mmHg on Day 1, which decreased to 3(4.41%) patients at six weeks.
Conclusion: Presence of pseudoexfoliation in cataract patients significantly increases the risk of vision-threatening complications, including a rise in intraocular pressure, glaucoma and its sequelae. Early diagnosis, detailed examination, knowledge of the complications, ability to manage these complications, use of antiglaucoma drugs and surgery by the experienced surgeon are the keys to success.
