A study to assess the knowledge regarding post mastectomy exercise among III year B.Sc (N) students in Narayana Nursing Institute at Nellore.

Abstract

Abstract: Breast cancer is the most common and the third most cancer among women in the world. Surgical treatment is the oldest and usually the first line of treatment for solid cancers. A mastectomy is usually carried out to breast cancer. The aim of the study was conducted to assess the knowledge regarding post mastectomy exercise among III year B.Sc (N) Students in NNI, Nellore. Objectives: 1) To assess the level of knowledge regarding post mastectomy exercise among III year students in Narayana Nursing Institution. 2)To find out the association between the level of knowledge regarding post mastectomy exercise among III year students and with their selected socio demographic variables. Methods: A quantitative research approach was utilized and descriptive research design was selected for this study. A total 100 third year B.Sc Nursing students selected by using non-probability convenience sampling technique. The data was collected by using structured questionnaire from each participant. Finally the data was analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics. Results: The results showed that, by assessing the level of knowledge regarding post mastectomy exercises among third year BSc Nursing students, 4(4%) obtained A grade and 96(96%) gained D grade level of knowledge. The mean value was 14.3 and standard deviation value was 3.18 respectively. The results also showed that there was significant association between level of knowledge regarding post mastectomy exercises among third year B.Sc Nursing students and with their selected socio demographic variables such as marital status and sources of information. Conclusion: The findings of the study concluded that majority of 96 (96%) third year B.Sc nursing students had D grade (>50%) level of knowledge regarding post mastectomy exercises in Narayana Nursing Institution. The investigators felt that health care professionals better to create awareness to improve knowledge on post mastectomy exercises.
