A Study To Assess The Knowledge And Practice Regarding Breast Self Examination Among Women In Venkatachalam at Nellore

Abstract

Abstract: Breast self examination is an inexpensive risk free method to detect cancer. When lumps are discovered at an early stage, they have better chance for long term survival. Breast self examination can be performed during as part of physical examination; it can be taught in any setting either to individual or group. Aim: The aim of the study was to assess the knowledge and practice regarding breast self examination among women in Venkatachalam, Nellore. Objectives: 1. To assess the level of knowledge regarding breast self examination among women. 2. To assess the level of practice regarding breast self examination among women. 3. To find out association between the level of knowledge regarding breast self examination among women with demographic variables .4. To find out association between the levels of practice of breast self examination among women with selected socio demographic variables. Methodology: A quantitative approach was used for this study the non experimental research design. A total 60 women were selected by using simple random sampling technique. The data collection was done by using structured questionnaire and observational checklist was adopted for this study. Results: the level of knowledge of women was,(1.7%) women have adequate knowledge, 19 (31.7%) women have moderately adequate knowledge and 40(66.7% )women had inadequate knowledge. There was an significant association between the level of knowledge regarding breast self examination among women with the demographic variables such as age, religion, occupation, and age of menopause. The practice of breast self examination among women was, 52 (86.66%) have inadequate practice, 08(13.33%) have moderate practice of breast self examination. The results also shows that there was an association between the level of practice regarding breast self examination among women with the demographic variables like age of menarche. Conclusion: The findings of the study reveals that majority of 40(66.7%) women had inadequate knowledge and 52 (86.66%) have inadequate practice among women about breast self examination in Venkatachalam, Nellore.
