CHEMO-SUPPRESSIVE AND CURATIVE ANTIMALARIAL BIOACTIVE POTENTIALS OF ALBIZIA CHEVALIER METHANOLIC LEAF EXTRACT

Abstract

Malaria a serious cause for concern due to the harmit causes to humanity including death and morbidity in the tropical countries. The crude mixture of phyto-constituents extracted from leaf of Albizia chevalieri using methanol was assessed for potential chemo-suppresive anti-plasmodial bio-activity during early and established infections. Plasmodium berghei NK64 with resistance to chloroquine wasused to check for the anti plasmodial activity of the extract. Albino wistar rats were treated with artemeter 80mg/kg/body weight, as the standard drug, group II were treated with 0.2ml of normal saline, group III, IV, V and VI, were treated 100, 200, 400 and 800mg/kg body weight of the test item(extract) respectively, the blood level of parasite, mean survival time and change in weight of the rats were used to demonstrate the bio-antimalarial potency of the crude extract.
