Comparative Pharmaceutico- Analytical Standardization of Bhallatakarishta Prepared Using Kanji and Water as a Liquid Media

Introduction: Bhallatakarishta is Ayurvedic formulation described in Ashtanga Sangraha in the context of Shotharogahikara. It is specially indicated as in Kushtha Roga. Bhallataka is mentioned in Upavisha varga. It is described as a poisonous medicinal plant in Drugs and Cosmetic Act 1940 & schedule E (1) drug. Kanji is used as Drava dravya in Bhallatakarishta. In the Sandhana Kalpana most of the Arishta are prepared in the presence of Jala (water) as Drava dravya and water is also cost effective and time consume as compared to Kanji preparation, so in the present study two different liquid media were taken in to the preparation of Bhallatakarishta i.e. Kanji and water. Aim: The main aimed of the study to develop Standard Manufacturing procedure (SMP) of Bhallatakarishta prepared by Kanji and water as a liquid media. Materials and methods: The formulation was prepared as per reference of Ashtanga Sangraha, in the presence of Kanji and water with the usage of Bhallataka and other 6 drugs and with including Mastu as a Prakshepa dravya in the three batches each media. Results: An average yield of Bhallatakarishta prepared by Kanji and water as a liquid media was 77.52% and 75.18% respectively. Completion of fermentation was observed on 25th & 19th day in Bhallatakarishta prepared in Kanji and water as a liquid media respectively. Conclusion: The present method of preparation can be considered as standard. No significant differences were found in pharmaceutical aspects of both the samples of Bhallatakarishta.
