Objective: To find the frequency of common bacterial pathogens causing pneumonia in children aged 1 year to 5 years.
Methodology: This descriptive cross sectional study was conducted in Department of Pediatric Medicine, Khyber Teaching Hospital, Peshawar, Pakistan from January 2016 to Febuary 2017. Data were collected from 292 patients by using non probability consecutive sampling technique and analyzed using SPSS version 21.
Results: Mean age of children was 2.7+1.2 years. Out of 292 children, 176(60.3%) were male and 116(39.7%) were female. Culture results showed 42.1% were infected by staphylococcus aureus, 29.8% with streptococcus pneumonia, 25.7% with Hemophilus influenza and others in rest 2.4% of children. We found that after the age of 2 years, most of bacteria were same for all age groups while in the age group 1-2 years, the major culprits were staph aureus (57.3% ) and strep pneumonae (35%) while only 7.7% had H. Influenza.
Concluaion: Staphylococcus aureus and streptococcus pneumonia were most common pathogens in children suffering from pneumonia aged between 1year to 5 years followed by H Influenza.
