Gastrointestinal Disorders: What the Dental Practitioner Should Know

Background: Gastrointestinal disorders (GIDs) are among the most common problems in health care. Among these GIDS, functional dyspepsia (FD), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcer disease (PUD), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), celiac disease, gastric cancer, and colorectal cancer. Objective: A significant number of GIDs may present different oral manifestations and require a special attitude from the dental practitioner. The main objective of this article is to review these GIDs and their oral repercussion. Methods: symptoms, pathogenesis, epidemiology, oral manifestations and management in dentistry of GIDs are reviewed. Discussion: A significant number of GIDs may induce oral manifestations. Among these are GERD, IBD, and celiac disease. Conclusion: Dental practitioner must be aware of GIDs oral manifestations and be prepared when their clinical signs and symptoms occur.
