An approach to find resveratrol in fruit of “Gmelina arborea Roxb. ex Sm.” out from the light of concept “Prathinidhi dravya (substitute)”

Raghi RG, Jollykutty Eapen.

Abstract

Pratinidhi Dravyas are substitutes, which deals with rational substitution of crude drugs. This concept was well referred from Bhavapraksha of 16th century A.D. The Substitution is mainly based on Rasapanchaka (Five Ayurvedic pharmacology principles) and proven on basis of its pharmacotherapeutic activity. Out from the light of this concept “Drakshyadhinalabhyethapradheyam Kaashmariphalam” (Fruit of Gmelina arborea Roxb. ex Sm. have to be taken in the absence of Vitis vinifera L. fruit) a chance for the presence of an acclaimed eminent antioxidant Resveratrol, a miracle constituent present in Vitis vinifera L. fruit recently found effective in SARS-CoV-2 was suspected to be in the fruit of Gmelina arborea Roxb. ex Sm. As the presence of Resveratrol was not till reported as chemical constituent of Fruit of Gmelina arborea Roxb. ex Sm., TLC, HPTLC analysis were done and eventually its presence was identified.

Key words: Resveratrol, Abhava prathinidhi, Substitute, Gmelina arborea Roxb.ex Sm., Vitis vinifera L., Draksha, Kaashmari, SARS-COV- 2
