Objective: Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are a group of drugs used in the management of pain. The aim of this study is to assess dentists knowledge on NSAIDs risks and to determine the most prescribed NSAIDs by dentists.
Methods: We collected information concerning the dentists knowledge on NSAIDs use and adverse effects. A questionnaire consisting of 22 questions was distributed to 123 Albanian dentists reached in different dental clinics, out of which only 87 agreed to participate. Only 70.73% of the distributed questionnaires were completed. The following factors were assessed: knowledge on NSAIDs use, side effects, contraindication etc.
Results: Respondents demonstrated poor knowledge of NSAIDs. Most of the respondents did not respond correctly to the questions with 39.08% of incorrect answers regarding the implications of NSAIDs in elderly patients and only 3.44% responded correctly to the contraindication of NSAIDs. The most common prescription were ketoprofen, ibuprofen, followed by ketorolac, and aspirin. diclofenac.
Conclusions: The dentists who participated in the survey have limited knowledge on NSAIDs use, contraindication, and safety, limitation that can affect the patient safety and well-being. Dentist should play particular attention to informing patients on NSAIDs use and should also keep updated on NSAIDs, through continuing education program.
