Challenges in the implementation of character education in elementary school: experience from Indonesia

Abstract

This article was aimed to identify the challenges that occur in the implementation of character education in elementary schools in Indonesia. This study applied a systematic review of literature using search protocol based on the PRISMA recommendation statement. The initial step of the study was the formulation of the research problem, then search of relevant research results from national journals on Garuda database and journal website. Then, an analysis of relevant research results was carried out in relation to the challenges in implementing the primary school character education program in Indonesia. The lack of support such as socialization, trainings, facilities and infrastructure were the main challenges that came from the government. Challenges from the teacher mostly focus on the difficulty and incompetence in assessing studentsÂ’ character. Challenges from the parents mostly related to the lack of support such as attention, participation and supervision for student character education.
