Objective: The aim of this study is to put forward the association between helicobacter pylori infection and elevated low density lipoprotein cholesterol among patients who were admitted to family medicine at Baskent University Adana Teaching and Medical Research Center.
Methods: Medical records of 463 patients who were referred to esophagogastroduodenoscopy were analysed in this retrospective study. Results of the rapid urease test (CLO) or histopathologic examination of gastric biopsy were recorded. The association between lipid profile and helicobacter pylori was investigated.
Results: Mean age of the patients was 51.2 ± 15.9 years ( range 16-89). Of the participants, 69.3% were women. Helicobacter pylori positivity was found as 73%. Mean value of low density lipoprotein cholesterol was significantly high among the helicobater pylori positive patients compared to helicobacter pylori negative ones (125.4 ± 31.9 mg/dl vs. 115.1 ± 32.2 mg/dl, p=0.044). There was a significant correlation between helicobater pylori severity and total cholesterol (r=0.288, p=0.028) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol levels (r=0.382 p=0.008) in 84 patients evaluated according to Updated Sydney System. The correlation between helicobater pylori severity and triglyceride and high density lipoprotein levels was insignificant.
Conclusions: Helicobater pylori infection changes lipid metabolism. However it is controversial whether this condition increases the risk for cardiovascular diseases.
