Psychopathology in parents and siblings of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder

Abstract

Objective: In this article, developmental and psychosocial adjustment problems observed in parents and siblings of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are aimed to review.

Method: For this purpose we searched Medline, and examined books related with the subject and previous studies related with these families.

Results: ADHD, other psychiatric disorders and social emotional adjustment problems were more frequently seen in parents and siblings of children with ADHD.

Discussion: Because of the genetic and psychosocial effects on the family, the risk of psychopathology is increased in parents and siblings of children with ADHD. In order to decrease the risk and have early diagnosis and interventions, families should be informed and involved in the treatment process.
