Assessment of Aloe Vera in Wound Healing: Bibliometric Analysis and Pilot Study in Rats

Biomedical research on accelerated cutaneous wound healing continues to be crucial, and interest in alternative treatments is growing. The supposed anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and tissue-regenerative qualities of Aloe vera are extensively acclaimed. Using a standardised rat model, this study aimed to assess the therapeutic effectiveness of topically applied Aloe vera gel on full-thickness cutaneous wounds. Ten healthy rats were used in this investigation. Each animal had two full-thickness cutaneous excisions made on its dorsum, for a total of 20 wounds, in order to optimize statistical power. These wounds were split evenly between two experimental groups (n =10 wounds per each), an experimental group treated with lyophilized Aloe vera gel(30mg/ml) and a negative control group treated with sterile normal saline. From day 0 to day 10, treatments were given topically every other day. At six distinct time points (days 0, 3, 7, 10, 15, and 21), macroscopic assessment and wound area measurements were systematically carried out. Both experimental groups showed progressive, time-dependent wound contraction and tissue regeneration at every time point, according to quantitative analysis. However, neither the contraction rates nor the total amount of time needed for full epithelialization differed significantly between the Aloe vera-treated wounds and the saline wounds, according to statistical comparisons. While Aloe vera is generally considered a powerful healing agent, these data imply that under this specific every-other-day application regimen and topical use, there was no acceleration in the physiological cascade of wound closure compared to conventional saline maintenance.
