A Survey on Wireless Sensor Network-Based IoT Designs For Gas Leakage Detection and Fire-Fighting Applications

Haythem Bany Salameh,Mohammad Dhainat, Elhadj Benkhelifa.

Abstract

The rapid advancements in wireless sensornetwork (WSN) technology gave impetus for large-scaledeployment of Internet-of-things (IoT) services and ap-plications. One of the envisioned IoT applications is theuse of wireless sensor nodes in gas-leakage monitoringand detection applications. Such IoT applications canprovide better protection to fire fighters and provide safetyand early-warning gas detection alarms within a timelymanner for individuals, factories and institutions. In thisarticle, we highlight the unique characteristics of WSNs,discuss the main WSN design requirements associated withgas leakage and monitoring applications, discuss maindifferences between data collection- and event detection-based WSN solutions, and present a detailed overview of the works that have been accomplished on providing WSNsolutions for gas leakage detection and monitoring.

Key words: WSNs, IoT, LPG-detection, Event-driven, Data-collection, Pre-deployment, On-the-fly deployment.
