Background: A wound is a break in the integrity of skin or tissues. Due to its huge burden on the society, further research is needed in the field of wound care. In Kaiyadeva Nighantu it is stated that, Ksheera Samskarita Madhu (Honey processed Milk) is Vrana Ropaka (Wound healing) and Rajani Swarasa Samskarita Madhu (Honey processed turmeric) is Vrana Shodaka (Wound sterilising). Objective: The present study was carried out to evaluate wound healing efficacy of Madhu (honey) processed with Haridra Swarasa (turmeric juice) and Goksheera (cow’s milk). Methods: Materials necessary for preparation of test formulations were obtained from authenticated natural sources and the honey was processed as mentioned in Kaiyadeva Nighantu. Full skin excision wound model was used for the study. Local application of test and standard drugs was done every day till the wound completely healed. Healthy female Wistar rats were divided into 7 groups with 6 animals in each group. After wound induction local application of test and standard drugs was done every day till the wounds completely healed. The wounds were measured every 3rd day and photographed. Results: Highest percentage of wound contraction was seen in the 5th group (GMM treated) on all the days except 6th day. By the 15th day, there was 100% wound contraction in 2nd, 3rd and 5th groups (ZnO, KM and GMM). By the 18th day, in 1st and 4th groups (Control and HMM) and by the 21st day in all of the groups. Fastest epithelialisation was seen in the 5th group (GMM). Slowest epithelialisation was noticed in the 7th group (GSM) followed by the 6th group (HSM). Conclusion: Both GMM and HMM have potential wound healing activity on topical application. GMM was the most effective among the test formulations. Samskarita/ processed honey is associated with slower wound healing, as seen in 6th and 7th groups (HSM and GSM).
