Magnetic Resonance Imaging And Its Role In Evaluating Symmetrical Thalamic Lesions

Background: Thalamic lesions can be of neoplastic, infectious, vascular, toxic, metabolic, or congenital origin. We will illustrate and discuss the diagnostic value of MR imaging in thalamic lesions.
Objective: The main aim of this paper is to discuss the characteristic imaging features and diagnostic approach of the varied thalamic lesions.
Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective study done for a period of 2 years from March 2017 to April 2019 using Signa HD xt 1.5 T MRI on 150 clinically suspected thalamic lesion cases. Among the 150 cases, 75 cases had lesions.
Multimodal MR imaging consisting of morphologic sequences, diffusion-weighted imaging, Gradient recall echo, perfusion and spectroscopy was performed. However, CT also plays an important role and often complements MRI.
Conclusion: Systemic analysis of the specific imaging features of thalamic lesions in combination with the patient’s history allows the radiologist to narrow down the differentials of this wide spectrum of the disease.
