regional disparity in matrnal mortality and morbidity

Abstract

Today’s status of maternal mortality and health issue shows a far greater disparity between developed
and developing countries. Maternal Morbidity: The WHO Maternal Morbidity Working Group (MMWG)
defines maternal morbidity as “any health condition attributed to and/or aggravated by Pregnancy and
childbirth that has a negative impact on the woman’s wellbeing”. Maternal Mortality: Death of a woman
from pregnancy-related complications occurring at anytime throughout pregnancy, labour, and childbirth
or in the postpartum period. 11% - 17% maternal death occur during childbirth, 50% - 71% in the postpartum
period. Haemorrhage -36.9 percent of deaths in northern Africa, compared with 16.3 in developed regions.
Hypertensive -Latin American and the Caribbean, accounting for 22.1 percent. 16 Steps and WHO strategies
are available to prevent MMR.
