STUDIES ON SOME ASPECTS CF THE HYDROBIOLOGY OF ALIERO DAM, KEBBI STATE, NIGERIA

Manga, S. S., Abuh, G. E..

Abstract

The study examined the physicochemical parameters and planktons of Aliero dam. The samples were collected for a period of six (6) months (December, 2010 to May, 2011) from three (3) different sampling points and were analysed in the laboratory for its chemical parameters while the physical parameters were measured in the field. The water samples were collected in plastic (l liter capacity) and the planktons were collected with the help of plankton net (0.2 mm in size) into a flat plastic container and labelled A, B and C representing the three sampling points on the Darn. The result of the analysis showed that temperature ranged from 20 to 24˚C. May 2011 had the highest temperature reading (24˚C) which showed a significant difference (P>0.05) when compared with the rest of the months. Temperature was observed to affect other parameters such as: Dissolved Oxygen, pH, Electrical Conductivity, Sodium Phosphate, Ammonium and Bicarbonate. Though when compared with World Health Organization expected values for Dam water, the quality falls within the maximum requirement for the optimum productivity of the Dam also serves for irrigation and domestic water supply use.

Key words: Physicochemical, Planktons, Dam, Water, Quality
