Jega, I. S., Garba, B. A., Bawa, D. Y., Wade, M. N. and Ribah, M. I..

Abstract

The proximate composition and mineral (Na, K, Ca, Mg and P) content of Heterotis niloticus, Oreochromis niloticus and Clarias gariepinus in Sabiyel Lake were determined to ascertain the nutrient status of the fish species in Sabiyel Lake, Aliero Local Government of Kebbi State, Nigeria. The total weight and length, standard length and body depth were evaluated. The freshly caught fish samples were obtained from the Sabieyel Lake landing site before being taken to the Science Chemical Laboratory at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto for analysis. The result indicated that C. gariepinus recorded significantly higher (p0.05) protein (13.70±0.15). H. niloticus recorded lowest mineral content of Na (79.00±0.06), Ca (0.36±0.08) and P (0.12±0.01) while O. niloticus gave the lowest amounts of Na (103.3±0.12), Mg (0.31±13) and P (8.66±0.31). They are therefore recommended for consumption, marketing and preparation of value added fish products.

Key words: proximate composition, mineral content, Sabiyel Lake
