Over the past two decades, Panchakarma has gained significant global visibility within wellness circuits, integrative medical practice, and public health discourse 1. The rise of chronic non-communicable diseases, lifestyle stress, and global interest in holistic health systems has further contributed to its prominence. However, as Panchakarma becomes increasingly commercialized, its conceptual depth and classical rigor risk being overshadowed by simplified narratives that market it as a universal detoxification or rejuvenation package 2. While such representations support its popularity, they obscure its scientific foundation, clinical precision, and individualized methodology.
Classical Ayurveda positions Panchakarma as a specialized therapeutic branch of Shodhana Chikitsa, aimed at expelling vitiated Doshas from the body for long-term disease management and health restoration 3. The selection, sequencing, and intensity of Panchakarma interventions are determined based on Prakriti (individual constitution), Vikriti (current disease state), Agni (digestive-metabolic strength), Srotas (physiological channels), Satva (mental resilience), Bala (strength and endurance), and environmental, dietary, and seasonal variables 4. This individualized approach predates and aligns with modern concepts of precision medicine and systems biology 5.
