Oxystegus (Limpr.) Hilp is a difficult genus to deal with as it has mixed characters with other Trichostomoidae genera especially Trichostomum Bruch. This genus was confused by many authors until a molecular study done by Werner segregated Oxystegus from Trichostomum and adopted movement of Trichostomum tenuirostris to genus Oxystegus. Oxystegus tenuirostris (Hook. & Taylor) A.J.E.Sm collected from Bani Suwayf governorate in the Nile Valley represents the first record of this genus from Egypt. This record raises the number of moss taxa recorded from Egypt to 182, moss genera to 57 and the number of Pottiaceae taxa to 83. Descriptions and illustrations of this new record together with geographic distribution and discussion are given.
