R.Subalakshmi, S.Anbu, Nithya K, Harini S, Anjana A K.

Abstract

Soil is one of the most important materials used in a variety of construction projects including earth canals and earth dams. Most of the failures of soil have been attributed to poor strength. Stabilization of soil by adding lime, cement, bitumen etc. are expensive and therefore require an economic replacement. In egg consumption, Tamil Nadu stands second place in India. Hence a huge number of eggshell wastes are produced every year. In the absence of an effective waste disposal, the utilization of eggshell for soil improvement will be a welcome development. In this paper, we studied the suitability of egg shell powder as a possible additive material to improve the strength of soils. Soil samples were collected and stabilized with eggshell powder and lime powder in proportions of 1% to 10% dry weight. The index and engineering properties were carried out to access the behaviour of soil with the addition of eggshell powder. The ESP and lime powder have the ability to controls the plasticity index of the soil. The standard proctor test was conducted to get the maximum dry density values and OMC. The UCC test was conducted for optimum dosages ESP and lime powder. The tests were also conducted for samples which were cured for 7 days. The strength value increased considerably on addition of ESP and lime powder.
