Objective: To determine the diagnostic accuracy of adenosine deaminase (ADA) levels in suspected patients of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB), taking auramine staining as the gold standard.
Methodology: This cross-sectional diagnostic validation study was conducted at the Pathology and Chest Departments of Bahawal Victoria Hospital, Bahawalpur, Pakistan, from October 2024 to July 2025. A total of 133 patients aged 18-75 years with suspected tuberculous pleural effusion were enrolled through non-probability consecutive sampling. Pleural fluid samples were tested for ADA levels, with a cutoff of 60 U/L, and compared against auramine/rhodamine staining as the reference. Data were analyzed in SPSS 26.
