A Study To determine The Prevalence Of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Among Children In Selected Schools At Nellore.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Today’s Children are tomorrow’s responsible citizens of the world. There is a great emphasize on children because of the very substantial proportion of the world’s population where 35-45% constitutes young children. High activity levels and short attention spans are a normal part of childhood for many children. Some children with ADHD only have problem with attention, other children only have issues with hyperactivity and impulsivity, some children have problem with both.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurobehavioral condition characterized by excessive restlessness, inattention, distraction and impulsivity. It is
usually identified when children are school aged, although it also can be diagnosed in people of all age groups. To determine the prevalence of attention deficit hyper
activity disorder among children in selected schools. To find out the association between the prevalence of attention deficit hyper activity disorder children with
their selected socio demographic variables & their parents. METHODOLOGY: A quantitative approach is adopted for this study. Descriptive research design was used. The setting selected for this study is Kuruganti Nagi Reddy Government high school B.V Nagar in Nellore. The target population of the study is children studying in
primary schools. Samples consist of children between 5-12 years of age. The sample size of the study is of 100 children between 5-12 years of age.Non probability,
purposive sampling technique is adopted for this study. RESULT: With regard to prevalence of ADHD symptoms among children related to inattention symptoms showing with the mean of 48 and with the standard deviation of 17.23.With regard to hyper activity symptoms showing with the mean of 34.73 and with the standard deviation of 12.02.with regard to oppositional defiant symptoms showing with the mean of 26.7 with the standard deviation of 10.69. CONCLUSION: Study concluded that prevalence of ADHD symptoms among 100children 35children had ADHD symptoms and 6(17.2%) had oppositional defiant symptoms.
