Assessment of Wound Healing Potential of Hippophae Rhamnoides Bark Extract In Murid Model

Abstract
The present study was undertaken in rats to evaluate the healing efficacy of aqua-ethanolic bark extract of H. rhamnoides (HR) in comparison to reference control (Povidone Iodine 5%) and placebo control (Propylene glycol) using full thickness excision wound model. The optimum concentration of HR extract for topical application was found to be 0.25 percent (w/w in PG) on the basis of the percentage wound contraction study. Rats were divided into three groups and topical application of PC, RC and HR was applied once daily on the 4 mm and 8 mm wounds. HR group showed faster per cent wound contraction on day 2 and day 6 in comparison to PC group. The histological examination on collected tissues revealed that HR group showed a significantly higher fibro-proliferation on day 2 and day 6; higher neo-angiogenesis and higher collagen score on day 6. Thus, H. rhamnoides bark extract revealed significant wound healing potential.
