Dairy calves are the future stock of the dairy farms, their proper welfare management is most important aspect for profitable dairy farming. The present study was carried out in Jamtara district of Jharkhand, collected data revealed that all the respondents attended their animals during calving. Cleaning of calves immediately after calving was done by almost all (92.5%) the respondents, while only 23.33 per cent respondents were performing ligation of naval cord and application of antiseptic. Most of the respondents (57.5%) were feeding colostrum to the calves when the animals were able to stand on their feet and only 35 percent of them were feeding colostrums within one hour of birth. Most of the respondents (51.56%) allowed the calves to suckle all the quarter of udder before and after milking and only 3.33 percent of the respondents followed weaning practice. Further, castration of male calf was done after the age of 3 months either by machine (81.81%) or by desi (local) methods ( 18.19%). The major constraints experienced by the farmers to follow proper calf welfare practices were lack of money, lack of knowledge and veterinary doctors in vicinity.
