Internet Addiction and Depression Levels among the Students Studying at Various Faculties of Erciyes University

Abstract

Bacground and Purpose. The study was carried out to determine internet addiction and depression levels among university students, the effects of some socio-demographic factors on these levels and association between internet addiction and depressive symptoms levels.
Material and Methods. This descriptive study was performed in Medicine, Engineering and Economics and Administrative Sciences Faculties of Erciyes University in 2015. A total of 1288 students were included in the study. Data were collected through socio-demographic questionnaire of 27 questions, Internet Addiction Scale (İBÖ) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDÖ). The students were visited in their classrooms and informed about the study by the researchers. Socio-demographic questionnaire, IBÖ and BDÖ were answered by the students under the supervision of the researchers. Unpaired t test, one way ANOVA (post hoc Scheffe) test, Pearson chi square test, Pearson simple correlation analysis and logistik regresyon methot were used for statistical analyses.
Results. Mean BDÖ and İBÖ scores were calculated as 12.1±9.1, 27.7±14.7 respectively. Prevalence rates were found 26.4% for depressive symptoms, 0.2 % for internet addiction, 7.5 % limited symptoms of internet addiction. Mean İBÖ score was found higher among the male students, whereas mean BDÖ score was higher among the females. A significant correlation was found between İBÖ and BDÖ scores (r 0.325, p
