AsAssessment of Perceived Parental Acceptance-Rejection and Psychological Adjustment Levels of Children Diagnosed with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

Abstract

ABSTRACT
Objective: This study aimed to assess the perceived parental acceptance-rejection and psychological adjustment levels of children diagnosed with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Method: This study included 64 children aged 9 to 12 who were diagnosed with ADHD and 52 healthy children and their parents. Chidren were evaluated by ‘Disorders and Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children - Present and Lifetime Version’. Perceived parental attitudes were assessed by ‘the Parental Acceptance-Rejection and psychological adjustment was assessed by ‘Personality Assessment Questionnaire’
Results: According to the results of a multivariate analysis of variance, this study, by comparing the ADHD and control groups, found that children diagnosed with ADHD perceived being rejected by their parents more and had a worse psychological adjustment than those who were not diagnosed with this disorder. A regression analysis compared children with ADHD and control group with respect to psychological adjustment and found that in children with ADHD the perception of parental rejection had a more profound effect on their psychological adjustment.
Conclusion: Comparison carried out in this study between clinical and normal population revealed that children with ADHD experience more perception of rejection presented by their parents compared than that of controls, and worse psychological adjustment as well.
