Nephroprotective Efficacy of Methanolic Extract of Kalmegh (Andrographis paniculata) in Acute Renal Failure in Dogs

Poonam Soren, Praveen Kumar.

Abstract

Comparative nephroprotective activity of the methanolic extract of Andrographis paniculata (400 mg/kg body weight) and peritoneal dialysis was studied in dogs suffering from acute renal failure. The activities of hemoglobin, serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, serum total protein, urine gamma glutamyl transferase were evaluated. The methanolic extract of Andrographis paniculata significantly increased the hemoglobin and serum total protein level, and decreased the levels of serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen and urine GGT, as observed in peritoneal dialysis treatment.

Key words: Antioxidant, Andrographis paniculata, Nephroprotective, Peritoneal Dialysis, Dog
