Temporary hemodialysis catheters: Duration of use and associated complications

Aim: Temporary hemodialysis catheters (THCs) are frequently used for urgent vascular access but carry high risks of complications, especially infections and mechanical issues. Complications depend on insertion site, catheter duration, and patient factors. This study investigates the relationship between catheter insertion site, patient age, catheter duration, and the development of catheter-related complications, and also assesses the preferred vascular access type after THC removal.
Material and Methods: This retrospective analysis included 122 patients undergoing THC placement from August 2022 to August 2024. Demographic data, catheter insertion sites, duration of use, and catheter-related complications (infection, bleeding, malfunction) were evaluated.
