Abstract

A retrospective study of Toxocara canis was carried out at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) Makurdi between January, 2011 and March, 2014 by examining clinical records of the hospital. Of one hundred and ninety-six (196) faecal samples collected from dogs and examined within the study period, one hundred and nine (109) showed parasite eggs in which Toxocara canis eggs were in 6.6% of the samples. The differences in the distribution of positive samples in relation to breed, age, and sex of dogs examined were statistically insignificant (P> 0.05). This is the first documentation of the prevalence of Toxocara canis in dogs presented to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, University of Agriculture, Makurdi, Benue State Nigeria.
