ABSTRACT:
Dry Socket is one of the complication following tooth extraction which is painful and always noticed delayed, usually in 72 hours. There is still controversy in concept of its diagnosis and management of dry socket among many practitioners. The objective is to evaluate the knowledge of dry socket by distributing questionnaires formatted forms among General Practitioners.
Material and methods
We distributed 109 structured questionnaires forms among Dental Practitioners (DP) of Riyadh and 101 GP (78%) responded about Knowledge of Dry Socket. This form has two part; first about knowledge and second regarding treatment option. We collected the data and analyze through updated SPSS site.
Results
76 (75.2%) practitioners agreed that dry socket is dislodgment of clot in socket, 21 (20.8%) also agreed that dry socket could be due to contamination of socket. Moreover, 33 (32.7%) dental practitioners claimed that dry socket patients may have discomfort symptom. Most of the dentists 76 (75.2%) presented acute and stabbing pain in dry socket whereas 14 (13.9%) dentist experienced dull, continuous pain. Results showed proportion t-test, knowledge and diagnosis showed significant 0.000 (< 0.000).
Conclusion:
It is an important to know concept of dry socket and to diagnosis dry socket properly by symptoms, clinical examination and timing. Then have to follow recommended treatment planning; irrigation of socket with saline to debride food particles and pack with sedative dressing and this takes 10-12 days to heal.
