Immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is a platelet disorder which is usually autoimmune in nature characterized by a low platelet count, purpura and episodes of hemorrhage which is caused by destruction of platelet by autoantibodies. Fall of platelet count below 50,000/mm3 increases risk of bleeding and fall of platelet count below 20,000/mm3 increases risk of spontaneous bleeding. Spontaneous hemothorax is a subset of hemothorax that involves accumulation of blood within pleural space in the absence of trauma or other causes.
