Objective: To compare various ENT diseases prevalent in pediatric and adult patients, who were treated at ENT Outpatient Department and Emergency at Tehsil Headquarter Hospital Khawazakhela, Swat.
Study Design: It is a descriptive study.
Place and Duration of Study: Study was carried out at Tehsil Headquarter Hospital Khawazakhela, Swat. Duration of study was 6 month, from January 2014 to June 2014.
Material and Methods: All the patients of any age group and both genders who reported in the ENT outpatient department and emergency during this period were included in this study. The patients who did not have ENT disease and erroneously reported in wrong OPD were excluded. The patients were divided into two groups i.e group A (adults) and Group B (children) on the basis of age. Patients with age more than 12 were categorized as adults and those younger than or equal to 12 were categorized as children. Frequency and percentage of various ENT diseases in children and adults were found. Data was analyzed with help of SPSS version 21 and Chi square was used to compare various diseases between the two groups.
Results: From January 2014 to June 2014, total 2526 patients were seen in ENT Department of Tehsil Headquarter Hospital Khawazakhela. Out of which 31.39 % (N = 793) patients were younger than or equal to 12 years of age and rest of 68.61% (N = 1733) were older than 12 years age. In children, 54.72 % (N = 434) were male and 45.28 % (N=359) were females. In adults (older than 12 years age), 57.29 % (N = 993) were male and rest 42.71 % (N = 740) were females.
Most common disease seen in the outpatient department was pharyngitis in adults (16.50%) followed by rhinosinusitis (15.75%) and wax ear (12.17%). In children, most common disease was rhinusinusitis (12.99 %) followed by chronic suppurtive otitis media (12.86 %) and tonsillitis (10.97%). Conclusion: Ear, nose and throat diseases affect all age groups however there is difference in the frequency of the diseases occurring in children and adults because of different immune response, playing habits, inquisitive nature and habit of putting objects in mouth, nose and ear by children.
