A group of 5 N-Substituted-3-cyano-4-methyl-6-hydroxy-2-pyridones were synthesised with focus on changing the substituents on the nitrogen atom of the pyridone ring. The melting point range of the pyridones was 205-298oC. All products obtained from the synthesis were coloured white and the percentage yield determined was 60,30,95.8,63.7,66.6% for 3-cyano-6-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pyridone,3-cyano-6-hydroxy-1,4-dimethyl-2-pyridone,3-cyano-1-ethyl-6-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pyridone,1-butyl-3-cyano-6-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pyridone,3-cyano-6-hydroxy-1-methoxypropyl-4-methyl-2-pyridone respectively. The IR spectra of the products showed OH stretch at around 2900cm-1, carbonyl stretch at about 1600cm-1 and also CN stretch at about 2200cm-1. Ar-H peaks were observed at about 5ppm due to the single hydrogen on the pyridone ring at position 5, also at about 2.09-2.51ppm peaks methyl protons where observed.
