Abstract

The frequency of metastasis in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinomas is relatively low. The following factors all associate with metastasis; primary tumor site, levels of tumor invasion and number of levels with pathologic lymph node prove to be significant. Patients with a squamous cell carcinoma located on the scalp and inadequate excision margins were at the great risk for developing regional lymph node metastasis. After excision in negative margins, patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma should be referred to specialized multi-disciplinary oncology hospitals for analysis and follow-up. Patients with basal cell carcinoma may be followed up less frequently, while subsets of patients with cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma should be joined in a follow-up protocol. Presented in this article is a patient with bilateral giant neck mass after scalp squamous cell carcinoma surgery, was presented and discussed in the light of literature knowledge.

Key Words: Squamous cell carcinoma, scalp, metastasis
