Melatonin and central nervous system

Abstract


 


The pineal hormon, Melatonin, which was described by Aaron B. Lerner in 1958, participates in many important physiological functions including neuroendocrine, oncostatic, immune regulatory and anti­aging,. Recently, melatonin was reported to be a potent free radical scavenger, being more potent in scavenging hydroxyl and peroxyl radicals. In this report, we reviewed the melatonin as a scavenger and its role in CNSpathologies. [Journal of Turgut Ozal Medical Center 1996;3(3):237-244]
